Quick Answer

The reveal article remains the best place to learn how Charts, Voyages, Vesper crafting, Mercenaries, Abyss, Legion and Atlas Anomalies work. This post focuses on exact patch-note details and what they are likely to change for builds, crafting, farming and the first week of the league.

Self-cast rises

Large groups of physical, cold, fire and lightning spells receive more damage, critical strike chance, coverage or cast speed.

Totems and mines lose power

Spell Totem, Ballista Totem, mine supports and Hierophant's totem scaling are all reduced.

Itemization changes deeply

Caster weapons, staves, corruptions, Talismans, Fractured Fossils, synthesis access and socket colours all change.

Mechanics gain exclusive economies

Abyss, Legion, Bestiary and Ultimatum become more important because key rewards are concentrated into their original mechanics.

The Biggest Changes in the PoE 3.29 Patch Notes

High-impact changes at a glance
Area Confirmed Change Early Impact
Sockets Any gem can enter any socket. Matching coloured sockets grant +10% gem Quality. Gear swaps become easier, while non-white sockets become premium optimization.
Chromatic Orbs They are rarer, removed from the vendor exchange for Jeweller's Orbs and cost more Gold on the Currency Exchange. Chromatics should no longer be treated as disposable campaign currency.
Self-cast Many spells receive more damage, critical chance, speed, coverage or lower Mana costs. Several neglected spell starters may become credible, but live testing is still required.
Minions Many non-Spectre minions no longer pause while attacking. Meaningful real-DPS gains for Zombies, Skeletons, SRS, Golems and Dominating Blow.
Totems and mines Several support multipliers and Hierophant's totem scaling are reduced. Existing league starters need recalculation before being recommended.
Abyss Abyss becomes the main source of Abyssal Jewels and Stygian Vises and gains new Scarabs and a pinnacle boss. Dedicated Abyss farming gains a clearer market role.
Legion Incubators are removed; Enshrouding Crystals and Vestigial Unique crafting are introduced. Legion's value shifts from generic loot toward exclusive Unique-item crafting.
Crafting Rare synthesis creation is removed, Fractured Fossils now fracture a modifier, and corruption implicits are heavily expanded. Crafting routes and chase-item markets will change substantially.

Socket Colours Are Now an Upgrade System

SYSTEMECONOMY

All item sockets are white by default, and a gem can be placed into any socket regardless of colour. A red, green or blue socket still has value, but it is now a bonus: a gem gains +10% Quality when its colour matches the socket.

Official Curse of the Allflame overview showing major league and game-system changes
The socket overhaul is one of several permanent core-game changes in 3.29.

How non-white sockets are created

  • New sockets added by Jeweller's Orbs, Orbs of Binding or the crafting bench are white.
  • Items can naturally generate red, green or blue sockets, with higher item levels improving the chance.
  • Chromatic and Tainted Chromatic Orbs force at least one non-white socket.
  • Higher item Quality improves the chance of additional non-white sockets.
  • New bench crafts guarantee at least two, three or four non-white sockets for 5, 20 or 75 Chromatic Orbs.

The practical league-start benefit is immediate: a strong armour upgrade no longer becomes unusable because its colours are wrong. Links and socket count still matter, but the most frustrating part of early equipment replacement is gone.

New Skills, Pacts and Exceptional Supports

NEW

The notes confirm two new Bloodline Classes, one exclusive to Curse of the Allflame, as well as four Pact gems, two Exceptional Supports, Mana-Infused Staff and four new transfigured skills. They also add 15 Unique items and three Divination Cards.

Pacts empower specific spell families while applying an Affliction to the player.
New gems confirmed in 3.29
Gem Function Likely Build Direction
Pact of Beidat Empowers projectile, targeted-area and chaining-beam spells with more damage and coverage, while adding an Affliction. Broad self-cast projectile and chaining spell setups.
Pact of Ghorr Empowers damage-over-time spells and grants Hunger of Ghorr, which periodically triggers Fleshrend. Chaos and other spell-based DoT archetypes.
Pact of K'tash Empowers damaging Vaal spells, reduces soul-gain prevention and refunds souls. Vaal-skill builds and burst-focused mapping.
Pact of Lycia Empowers self-cast channelling spells and periodically triggers lightning bolts. Incinerate, Divine Ire and other channelled spells.
Coursing Currents Links Chill and Shock, increasing their effect and causing each ailment when the other is applied by hits. Elemental ailment and hybrid cold-lightning setups.
Crystalfall Triggers a falling Abyssal crystal when supported Slam skills hit. Self-used Slam builds.
Mana-Infused Staff Reduces spell Mana cost, raises block chance and releases an arcane wave when blocking. Defensive staff casters and Mana-oriented builds.

The new transfigured skills are Divine Blast of Radiance, Holy Hammers of Spirals, Holy Sweep of Hammerfalls and Reap of Butchery. Their final place in the meta depends on gem levels, scaling interactions and practical gameplay.

Self-Cast Spellcasters Receive the Largest Balance Pass

BUFF

GGG has separated spell families more clearly. Physical and cold hit spells generally gain critical strike chance, fire spells receive stronger added-damage effectiveness and lower Mana costs, while lightning spells cast faster but cost 25% more Mana in many cases.

Examples of substantial spell changes
Skill Family Confirmed Change Reading
Divine Ire Higher base damage and added-damage effectiveness, with stronger growth at high gem levels. One of the clearest self-cast winners, especially with Pact of Lycia.
Ethereal Knives 10% base critical chance, more damage and more projectiles. Large numerical and coverage improvement.
Bladefall and Blade Blast More damage, area and critical chance across several variants. Physical spell packages deserve renewed testing.
Fireball, Firestorm and Flameblast More damage or added-damage scaling and 20% lower Mana costs. Fire self-cast becomes easier to sustain and scale.
Ice Nova and Freezing Pulse More damage, higher critical chance and stronger Freeze behavior. Cold hit spells gain both offense and control.
Arc, Ball Lightning, Crackling Lance and Storm Call Faster cast times and several damage or coverage buffs, but 25% higher Mana cost. Faster gameplay with a real resource-management trade-off.
Vaal Ice Nova, Vaal Spark and Vaal Storm Call Large damage, speed or duration buffs. Pact of K'tash may create new Vaal-spell endgame builds.

Archmage is not a clear winner

Archmage Support now grants added lightning damage equal to 8–14% of unreserved maximum Mana instead of 10–16%. That is a direct reduction. Faster lightning spells also spend Mana more quickly, so players should not assume every Mana build was buffed simply because lightning casting became faster.

Unleash and Cast while Channelling improve

Unleash and Greater Unleash receive less severe repeat penalties, while Cast while Channelling triggers more frequently and applies a smaller damage penalty. These are meaningful alternatives for self-cast or hybrid spell setups.

Minions Win, While Totems and Mines Need Recalculation

BUFFNERF

Many minions gain real damage uptime

Non-Spectre minions no longer pause while attacking. GGG specifically identifies Dominating Blow minions, Zombies, elemental and Chaos Golems, Summon Raging Spirit and Skeletons as receiving significant damage-per-second improvements. This is not merely a tooltip buff; it improves actual attack uptime.

Spectres are the exception. Several high-life monsters have reduced Spectre Life, with GGG stating that no Spectre should exceed Meatsack-level Life. Spectre support builds may remain useful, but tankiness must be rechecked.

Totem builds are directly reduced

  • Hierophant's Ritual of Awakening falls from 5% to 3% more damage per summoned Totem.
  • Spell Totem applies a larger less-damage penalty.
  • Ballista Totem applies a larger less-damage penalty.
  • Totem critical passives are also reduced.

Mines lose support efficiency

Blastchain Mine and High-Impact Mine apply larger damage penalties and higher cost multipliers. Charged Mines also loses throwing speed and critical chance per charge. Mine starters may still function, but previous league recommendations cannot be copied unchanged.

Assassin, Inquisitor, Occultist and Luminary Changes

REWORK
Official Luminary Scion Ascendancy passive tree for Path of Exile 3.29
Luminary is the new Mercenary-focused Scion Ascendancy.

Assassin

Mystical Infusion introduces Bifurcated spell critical strikes: critical chance is rolled twice, and succeeding twice doubles the extra critical damage. Deathmarked gains Mark effect and instant Leech scaling by maximum Power Charges.

Inquisitor

Instruments of Justice lets spell critical chance use the main-hand weapon's base critical chance. Fanaticism lasts longer and grants 75% less spell cost instead of reduced cost, making it more reliable under the new cost-efficiency system.

Occultist

Unhallowed Rite rewards channelling with Spirit Infusion stacks that accelerate Energy Shield recharge and grant more channelling damage at the cost of higher resource use.

Luminary

The new Scion Ascendancy permanently hires and equips Mercenaries, creating an entirely new companion-build archetype.

The passive tree also gains Arcane Conservation and Contemplative Meditation clusters for cast speed, spell Mana Cost Efficiency, Intelligence, reservation and general Cost Efficiency.

Atlas, Map and Endgame Changes

ATLASSYSTEM
Official Atlas Anomaly screenshot from Path of Exile Curse of the Allflame
Atlas Anomalies appear after completing Voidstone-affected maps and require no Map Item.

Reflect becomes Thorns

Map reflect modifiers no longer continuously reflect a percentage of hit damage. Rare monsters instead activate Physical or Elemental Thorns after being hit, reflecting fixed damage for five seconds. Thorns can be mitigated through Evasion, Block, Armour and Resistances, making reflect maps less binary but still dangerous for rapid-hit builds.

The map pool rotates

Twenty-nine maps return and another twenty-nine leave. Notably, Crimson Temple and Defiled Cathedral are removed from the Atlas, which changes familiar divination-card routes. Untainted Paradise becomes an Atlas event node instead of a usable Unique Map.

Scrying Orbs replace Nameless Seer scrying

A new Atlas cluster gives Tier 14+ maps a chance to drop Scrying Orbs on completion. The Orb stores its source map and can move that map area's Divination Card pool to another map on the Atlas. This creates a tradable market around desirable card pools.

League Economy and Farming Changes

ECONOMY

The most important economic theme is exclusivity. More rewards now come primarily from their original league mechanic, which creates clearer specialization and potentially stronger bulk markets.

Mechanics with new or concentrated reward identities
Mechanic Change Possible Market Effect
Abyss Primary source of Abyssal Jewels and Stygian Vises; new Scarabs and pinnacle content. Higher demand for dedicated Abyss farming and strong jewel rolls.
Legion Splinters are concentrated into Legion; Incubators disappear; Enshrouding Crystals become exclusive chase drops. Value moves toward Generals, Emblems and Vestigial Unique crafting.
Bestiary Talismans become beast-linked, uncorrupted and craftable, while Unique Talismans leave the core pool. Red Beasts and Bestiary bosses gain new item-value potential.
Ultimatum Becomes the exclusive source of Catalysts. Catalyst supply depends more directly on Ultimatum participation.
Betrayal Scarab Chest output is doubled; Vagan gains Enshrouded Unique and Trarthan Scarab rewards. Safehouses may become a stronger supply source for Scarabs and new systems.
Breach Lower pack counts, fewer simultaneous Unstable Breaches and reduced pack-size passives. Less density, though Wombgift and Hiveblood output is stated to remain unchanged.

Gold also gains additional pressure from Mercenary wagers, Cadiro Anomalies and higher Currency Exchange fees for Chromatic Orbs. Players should avoid treating Gold as an unlimited convenience resource during the first days.

Crafting, Caster Bases and Corruption Implicits

CRAFTINGECONOMY

Several changes could reshape high-end rare-item production.

Synthesis rare-item creation is removed

Non-Unique Synthesised items can no longer be obtained through normal routes, the Harvest synthesis craft is removed, and Bestiary can reroll synthesis implicits only on Unique items. Existing Standard items remain, but new-league rare synthesis supply is effectively cut off.

Fractured Fossils now fracture a modifier

Fractured Fossils no longer duplicate an item. They now fracture one random modifier and cannot be used on influenced or already-fractured items. This is a complete role change and should be treated as a new crafting currency rather than the old duplication tool.

Caster weapons receive broad buffs

  • Spell-gem level modifiers on staves gain another tier, reaching +4 for specific spell damage types.
  • Spell and elemental damage prefixes on staves rise as high as 200%.
  • Added spell damage is improved substantially, especially on staves.
  • High-tier cast speed and spell critical modifiers become easier to roll.
  • Attack and spell block modifiers can now appear on staves.

The corruption pool gains chase outcomes

New implicits include maximum charges, maximum resistances, action speed on boots, curse-on-hit gloves, gem levels, gem Quality, spell damage, cast speed, explode effects and socketed support modifiers. Corruption should become more attractive for finished caster gear, rings, shields, boots and two-handed weapons.

The patch also introduces two default bench crafts: reroll three modifiers on a rare item for three Chaos Orbs, and reroll one modifier for eight Chaos Orbs. Their exact eligible-modifier behavior will need in-game testing before strong crafting recommendations are made.

Notable Unique Item Winners and Nerfs

ITEMS

Dozens of caster, Mana and socket-related Uniques change. The full official list should be checked for any planned build, but these stand out immediately.

Selected Unique-item changes
Item Direction Why It Stands Out
Cane of Unravelling Buff Gains a maximum Power Charge and much stronger cast speed and Mana regeneration per charge.
Disintegrator Buff More physical damage and physical damage reduction per Siphoning Charge.
Doryani's Delusion High variance rework Level 30 Purity, corrupted implicits and much wider Life, defense and movement rolls.
Grey Spire Buff Higher global damage and maximum resistances, plus doubled implicit magnitudes on new versions.
Void Battery Rebalanced Less spell damage per charge but lower global penalty and substantially more Mana.
Rathpith Globe Nerf Spell damage and critical scaling fall from 5% to 3% per 100 maximum Life.
The Gull Nerf Shrine effect is reduced substantially.
Dialla's Malefaction Mixed Still always gains socket-colour Quality, but green-socket Quality drops from +30% to +20%.

Quality-of-Life Improvements Worth Knowing

QOL
  • Animated Guardian equipment can be inspected by right-clicking its icon.
  • Most currency, fragments, cards and stackable stash items now stack to 10,000 instead of 5,000.
  • Repeated currency use drains one inventory stack fully before moving to the next.
  • All party members can interact with Expedition detonators, Eldritch Altars, Harvest plots and Sentinels.
  • A crafting bench appears in every town from Act 2 onward.
  • Faster Attacks and Faster Casting become available to all classes through campaign vendors.
  • Item-copy text always uses the advanced modifier description.
  • Passive and Atlas tree search highlighting is improved.
  • Currency Stash slots are added for Volatile Vaal Orbs and Crystallised Rancour.

Early Winners, Losers and Mixed Results

Likely winner Conditional / watchlist Likely loser
VERDICT

This is a first reading of the official numbers, not a final tier list.

Pre-launch balance outlook
Category Early Verdict Reason
Self-cast physical, cold and fire spells Likely winner Broad damage, critical, area and Mana-cost improvements.
Lightning self-cast Likely winner with conditions Faster casting and several damage buffs, but much higher Mana consumption.
Unleash and Cast while Channelling Winner Lower repeat or trigger penalties.
Zombies, Skeletons, SRS, Golems and Dominating Blow Winner Removal of attack pauses improves actual DPS.
Abyss, Legion, Bestiary and Ultimatum farmers Opportunity Exclusive reward pools create clearer reasons to specialize.
Spell Totem and Ballista Totem Loser Larger less-damage multipliers and weaker totem scaling.
Mines Loser Support damage and cost efficiency are reduced.
Archmage Mixed to negative Lower Mana-to-damage scaling despite the broader spellcaster push.
Spectres Mixed Some high-life corpses lose survivability while other minion changes do not apply to Spectres.
Rare synthesis crafting Loser New non-Unique Synthesised items are largely removed from league creation.

What the Patch Notes Mean for League Start

ACTION
  • Do not copy an old totem or mine starter without recalculating it. Multiple support and Ascendancy changes directly reduce those archetypes.
  • Minions deserve serious starter consideration. Better attack uptime improves several low-gear minions before expensive scaling begins.
  • Self-cast builds have more options than the reveal suggested. Fire, cold, physical and lightning families receive distinct advantages.
  • Plan Mana early for lightning casters. Faster casting with 25% higher base Mana cost can turn an apparent buff into an unsustainable setup.
  • Save Chromatic Orbs. They are rarer and are now used to chase gem-Quality bonuses rather than merely fix compatibility.
  • Watch caster weapon bases. Staff, wand, sceptre and rune-dagger affix improvements may create strong demand for well-rolled rares.
  • Abyss, Legion, Bestiary and Ultimatum may be excellent early markets. Their exclusive rewards should make bulk materials and desirable items easier to identify and sell.
  • Do not assume familiar card-farming maps remain available. The Atlas rotation removes several popular maps, while Scrying Orbs introduce a new way to move card pools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest change in PoE 3.29?

The socket overhaul has the widest impact because every build can now place any gem in any socket. Coloured sockets remain relevant as a source of +10% gem Quality.

Are self-cast spells strong in 3.29?

Many are substantially stronger on paper, but not every spell received the same treatment. Lightning spells also spend more Mana, and live testing is still needed before final starter rankings.

Was Archmage buffed?

No. Archmage's added lightning damage scaling was reduced. Some Mana tools improved elsewhere, but the support itself is weaker.

Are minion builds better?

Several non-Spectre minions should deal more real damage because they no longer pause while attacking. Some Spectres lose Life, so the result differs by minion type.

Are totem builds still viable?

They may remain viable, but Spell Totem, Ballista Totem, Hierophant and totem critical scaling were all reduced. Existing build guides need recalculation.

Why might Chromatic Orbs become expensive?

They are rarer, no longer sold by town vendors for Jeweller's Orbs, cost more Gold on the exchange and are required to chase non-white sockets for gem Quality.

What happened to Incubators?

They are no longer obtainable in new leagues. Legion now focuses on Enshrouding Crystals, Vestigial Unique items and revised Timeless Conflict rewards.

Can new rare Synthesised items still be made?

Normal creation routes are removed. The notes state that non-Unique Synthesised items can no longer be obtained except by corrupting Synthesis Unique items into rares.

Which farming mechanics look most interesting?

Abyss, Legion, Bestiary and Ultimatum gain clearer exclusive rewards. Their actual profitability will depend on drop rates, Atlas setup and market demand.

Should the reveal article be replaced by this post?
